To France 23 December 1915; MC for 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty during a retirement, when he handled
his battery with great ability, though depleted
of officers, N.CT.O.'s, and men, on
one occasion keeping his guns in action at
close range and using Lewis guns with great effect
on the advancing enemy. Throughout
a critical period he showed great initiative
and fearlessness.' (London Gazette, September 1918)
