Walter transferred from the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment to the RFC in late 1916. Like his flight commander, Captain A. Conningham, he was one of the little-known DH 5 pilots who did a great deal of air fighting with 32 Squadron in July 1917. During that month he claimed 6 victories.
Death
- Near Vlamertinge; offensive patrol; the DH5 B369 flew into a kite balloon cable, broke up and crashed
