  • He joined the London Rowing Club after leaving Cambridge, and was one of its most successful oarsmen during the three seasons immediately preceding the war. In the season before the war Lieutenant Hughes took up sculling with success, winning the juniors at Molesey Regatta, and taking the junior-senior sculls at Kingston Regatta a week
    later.
