- While sitting in a portion of a trench with a small covering over his head during a bombardement, a shell splinter struck the cover knocking off a portion of wood which was driven into his leg, breaking it. He could not be taken out of the trench for 24 hours and blood poisoning set in;
- Died from the shock of his amputated leg at n°3 CCS
