Embarked 3 January 1916, Brisbane; appointed Driver on 3 July 1916; Military Medal for his service in action at Westhoek 2-4 October 1917, (East of Ypres). "These Drivers have been conspicuous in devotion to their work and horses carrying ammunition in the short time available – setting a fine example of gallantry and enthusiasm. The result of the work of the Drivers was that the Battery had 8,000 rounds on the morning of the attack (4/19/1917) of which they had salved 1,000 rounds. Driver MITCHELL was wounded”
