  • Prior military service in the Garrison Artillery for fourteen years; enlisted with service n° 441 and rank of colour sergeant in D Coy of 11 Bn.; MM for the Gallipoli campaign, 'for consistent gallantry and devotion to duty. During the fighting in Gallipoli he worked a Trench Mortar and later a 3.7 Howitzer with excellent results. Although constantly exposed to shellfire his Mortar always came into action with effect when and where required. His conduct was consistently gallant' (London Gazette, 27/10/1916); embarked for France at the end of March 1916; promoted 2nd Lt. on 23 August 1917; one year in England, for attending several courses; promoted Lt. on 5 October 1917; rejoined Bn. on 11 October;

  • 19 October, in a live bomb throwing practice, a bomb bursted prematurely, injuring several men
