Enlisted in the Royal Artillery, March 1879, at the age of 15 years and 7 months; served in India for ten years; discharged 1893; re-enlists in 1900; after emigration to Canada, he enlists in 1916 and gives up a wrong age (43 in stead of 52); court-martialled on the 27th February 1917 for permitting the escape of a person in custody;
