WWI in Poperinge
FLYBOYS - Prolonged!
Thematic exhibition about pilots buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
Monument Dienen/To Serve
The Town of Poperinge asked the Dutch artist Anno Dijkstra to create a work relating to the subject ‘executions in WWI’. Dijkstra was inspired by the town memorial to the First World War. It shows a soldier on a socle, holding his arm heroically in the air.
Chinese memorial site ‘Busseboom’
The site ‘Busseboom’ commemorates the
deployment of the Chinese labourers
during the Great War. The visitor meets
two impressive monuments. These are the
first and only monuments paying tribute to
Chinese WWI-labourers.
Execution spot - Death cells
During the Great War the courtyard op the Poperinge Town Hall was used as an execution spot. Several British soldiers faced the firing squad in this place.
